Incidentally, this (mis)behaviour can be tested/confirmed by anyone
by doing:

: >/usr/pike/lib/pike/master.pike
touch /usr/pike/lib/pike/master.pike.o

Then run pike again.  If it uses the precompiled version, everything
will be fine.  If it cannot load the precompiled version, it will
bail out with an error.

It would be interesting to know which versions this already is/was happening
on.
